Steps to become a CIBSE Low Carbon Energy Assessor to produce Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs)
Article
Download the LCEA Regional Flowchart
1. Undertake desk based EPC / Low Carbon Consultant Design training & examination with CIBSE go to training page for details (dates, costs, booking form etc). This training is applicable in England and Wales only, not Scotland.
2. Take examination and/or training in the use of software...go to training page for details
3. Download and fill in this Accreditation of Prior Learning (APEL) form (this is the application form you need to fill in to become an assessor) this form relates to the National Occupational Standard download here: Download the National Occupational Standard (If you are a full member of CIBSE or a member of a related professional body, you do not have to fill in some of the boxes in Annex 1 of the APEL form – check this table to see if this relates to you: Download Table of professional bodies and membership grades meeting the professional requirements of Units 1 and 2 of the NOS.)
4. Submit your completed APEL form with supporting documentation:
· CCMP 006 CIBSE Certification Code of Conduct for Energy Assessors Download
· Supply evidence of CPD over a 2 year period and an up to date CV...go to CPD page for details
· Certificate of software training / exam & email confirming pass of EPC / LCC Training
· Evidence of PI cover · Evidence of any professional membership you have
· You will then need to submit two completed EPCs for assessment before you can be accredited as an EA. This needs to include one for an existing building and one for a new building. It is envisaged that most candidates will submit an EPC which they have been commissioned to prepare but if no commissions have been received at the time of application, candidates can provide a certificate of the business premises they occupy or can contact CIBSE Certification for other alternative sources.
All documentation can be sent electronically to CIBSE Certification by email

Hard copy documents do not have to be mailed.
Note: If you want to produce Energy Performance Certificates you need to be qualified in producing asset ratings using the national calculation methodology. For this reason, EPC producing Low Carbon Energy Assessors will be on the LCC Design register.
The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) has negotiated an agreement with CIBSE Certification, under which membership of CIAT will help you become accredited.
